Decks

All decks require a permit. This requirement exists to make sure that the deck is structurally capable of supporting people and objects without collapse. The following items are required to obtain a permit:

  1. Site plan
  2. A plan indicating the type of lumber to be used and how far the lumber will span between supports

All decks higher than 30" above grade must have a guardrail. If a guardrail is installed on a deck below 30" it must still meet code. Guardrails must be installed not less than 30 inches or more than 42 inches in height measured from the deck surface to the top rail. The guards should not have ant openings that would allow a 4" sphere through.
