General Requirements/How to Apply

Education

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or have a GED.

Age

You must be 21 years old at time of the entrance exam or:

  • 18+ years of age:
    • with 60 hours of study at an accredited college or university
    • or with an Associate Degree from an accredited college or university
    • or honorable discharge after 2 years of military service with 30 hours of study at an accredited college or university

Citizenship

You must be a U.S. citizen at the time of your application.

Health & Physical

  • Vision must be correctable to 20/20
  • You must pass a physical examination and drug screen

Certification

You must meet all legal requirements for future licensing and certification required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). For a complete listing of the state’s licensing requirements please visit TCOLE.

Criminal History

You are not eligible for the application process if: 

    o   You have had any Class B Misdemeanors (within previous ten years)

    o   You have had any Class A Misdemeanors or Felony offenses within your lifetime

    o   You have been convicted in any court of an offense involving family violence as defined under Chapter 71, Texas Family Code

Offenses from other states will be related to comparable Texas State Statutes.
